Event Details:

Come with us on a voyage of discovery.
Did you know that Sydney Harbour’s role as a major commercial port has ended and with it has gone 235 years of maritime trade and shipping?

It’s a fact that from the earliest days of colonisation, through the eras of sail and steamships, to the modern cargo ships today, Sydney has been a city which grew from ships and
the sea. Now, all that remains is memories . . . and the relics of that maritime past, there for you to see.

Our Westside Stories cruise travels west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and explores how the Harbour has evolved. Fascinating relics of the working harbour’s past share the waterfront
with today’s replacements, an intriguing mix of history and modern times.

And our heritage motor launch can poke into places larger tourist vessel cannot, so you see the sights up close and personal, with an experienced guide on board to share with you the harbour’s stories.

Highlights

  • We go ashore at the Fleet’s shipyard in Rozelle Bay to see, with an expert guide,
the Fleet’s other historic vessels, the workshops and major restoration
projects now underway. The shipyard is not open to the public so this is a rare
    look behind the scenes.

On the cruise you will see:
  • what started with a dry dock, but they went on to build warships, pipes and locomotives
  • where Palmolive and Protex soap was made alongside where our ferries now rest
  • view a heritage listed incinerator by the same designer as our capital city
  • and be visually transported to Scandinavia by multi coloured harbour front workshops
  • pawnbroker’s three brass balls, or something else? and what does Ultimo mean?
  • a bay named after a landowner, who with his wife was hanged for murder
  • circumnavigate an island that housed convicts, water police, gunpowder, harbour
masters, the Maritime Service Board and a TV film set.
